Brian’s a city boy who’s been dreaming of being a farmer for as long as he can remember and I was raised on the farm but life’s twists and turns had taken me pretty far away from my original ideals.
I went back to school at 40 years old and now I am a registered nurse with the VA Hospital in Indianapolis half of the time and a farmer the other half of the time. Brian has retired from trucking to devote all his energy to building the farm. A healthy lifestyle and great food are very important to Brian and to me.
We are blessed to farm 60 acres in the hills of Brown County,
Indiana. The farm has been in my family for four generations
starting with my great grandparents, Grandpa and Grandma Webb, who came here just after the great depression. They were soon followed by my grandparents and their children. Over the years, our family has reclaimed washed out land, cleared brush, planted and improved pastures, done timber stand improvement, built ponds and brought the land back.
When I was a child, we raised beef cattle and horses and lots and lots of hay. Now, Brian and I are continuing that livestock tradition as a part of our farm. We use intensive grazing with our chickens, ducks, sheep, hogs and cattle. We are using conservation practices such as sod waterways and green manures to preserve and improve our soil and keep our water clean.
Our friends keep reminding us that we “work all the time”. They want to know what we do to relax. I always tell them that we’re living and building a dream. What they call work, we love to do. And as for relaxing, there is nothing like leaning over the fence on a misty morning to watch a litter of tiny pigs tumble out of their house. You just can’t beat a cup of tea snuggled up on the porch swing on a rainy day with the dogs sleeping at your feet. Or those last golden moments at sunset when all the work is done and the fish are biting in the pond by the house.
So you see, we do relax. Besides we’re living our dreams. We are happy!
