shetland sheep

We chose Shetland sheep for our flock for many reasons. They are an “unimproved” breed so they retain the ability to forage effectively and lamb with little or no assistance.

They produce delicious very tender meat with a mild flavor. A whole lamb provides approximately 15-25 pounds of meat for your family. Lamb will be available this year for $3/lb live weight for a 1/2 or whole lamb by reservation. We should also have some lamb available by the piece in the fall.

Shetlands have a soft, strong and durable wool that I love to spin. And they come in every color and combination of colors you could ever imagine on a sheep and some you never thought could happen on a sheep. Fleeces will be available beginning in April.

If you are interested in wool or lambs please contact us as soon as possible as we usually run out.

 Meet the Flock!

This is Hickstick.
The first picture is after shearing this spring with her new lamb. The second picture was taken in October. sporting a beautiful white fleece.

This is Dizzy Lizzy.
We named her Dizzy because when she came to the farm she was so wild and crazy. When anyone came close to her pen she ran in circles as fast as she could go trying to escape.  She has a long silver fleece.

This is Gracie.
She was born here on Kiss My Grass Farm. She looks very much like her momma, Dizzy.

This is Zarah “The Warrior Princess”
she is a fiercely protective mother. Her fleece is a beautiful black with one white spot on the left shoulder. She had a nice set of twins this spring. We are keeping the ewe lamb for our flock.

These are Zarah’s 2009 lambs, Stinky and Flower.

This is Beijing , but Brian calls her “China” , because he can’t remember her registered name.  She fell in “love” with Brian when we visited Gail Former’s Underhill Farm. She followed him all over the place. In fact, she still does.
Beijing has a lovely nicely crimped gray fleece.

Elfie is next. She is the most timid of the ewes we bought from Underhill Farm. We are looking forward to lambs in the spring.

And then there’s Glenna also known as the “Stay Puff Marshmallow sheep”. She is my personal favorite with her fluffy white fleece and calm nature. I’m looking forward to making a rug or two from her fleece next winter.

This black beauty is Beulah. Even after a summer in the sun she is still a rich true black without a single white hair. Her fleece is soft and a shorter length and has a nice tight crimp.

Last but not least, we have Juniper. Juniper is a very petite and delicately built young ewe. Her fleece is a warm chocolate brown and nice and soft.  I’m looking forward to spinning some in the spring.
